Poult Days
Our turkey poults have arrived!! 12 in all, these Midget White Turkeys are a small, broad-breasted turkey that looks like a miniature version of a commercial Broad Breasted White turkey. The BIG difference is that Midget Whites are a heritage breed (developed in the 1960's) and grow to only 8-12 pounds.
Heritage breed turkeys are domesticated turkeys that have been bred for specific characteristics and traits over many generations. These breeds are typically older, slower-growing, and more physically diverse than commercial breeds. They are valued for their flavor, texture, and unique appearances, as well as for their ability to thrive in natural environments and live healthy, natural lives.
Heritage breed turkeys can vary in size, color, and plumage, with breeds such as Bourbon Red, Narragansett, and Standard Bronze being popular choices. These turkeys often have more pronounced breasts, darker meat, and richer flavor compared to their commercial counterparts. They are also known for their ability to breed naturally, forage for food, and withstand harsh environmental conditions.
Due to their genetic diversity and adaptability, heritage breed turkeys are considered an important part of preserving genetic diversity in livestock and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. As a small-scale, urban farmer I value their unique qualities and I am committed to preserving these traditional breeds for future generations.
