Spring Bees

Spring Bees

Nothing is more exciting that the day our bees arrive! Bunched into a box of 5,000 ladies is one queen, whom the future growth of the hive rests upon. This one queen, in the first year of her life, can lay anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 eggs!! Her egg laying capacity typically peaks during the spring and early summer months when forage and weather conditions are optimal.

Hives are self-governing. No role is above another. The queen lays eggs to support the colony growth. Equally as important are the worker bees, who are responsible for a variety of tasks essential to maintain the hives function and to support the queen and developing brood (eggs). Honeybee colonies are a remarkable example of cooperation and coordination for the collective good of their society.

Poult Days

Poult Days

Our turkey poults have arrived!! 12 in all, these Midget White Turkeys are a small, broad-breasted turkey that looks like a miniature version of a commercial Broad Breasted White turkey. The BIG difference is that Midget Whites are a heritage breed (developed in the 1960's) and grow to only 8-12 pounds.

Heritage breed turkeys are domesticated turkeys that have been bred for specific characteristics and traits over many generations. These breeds are typically older, slower-growing, and more physically diverse than commercial breeds. They are valued for their flavor, texture, and unique appearances, as well as for their ability to thrive in natural environments and live healthy, natural lives.

Heritage breed turkeys can vary in size, color, and plumage, with breeds such as Bourbon Red, Narragansett, and Standard Bronze being popular choices. These turkeys often have more pronounced breasts, darker meat, and richer flavor compared to their commercial counterparts. They are also known for their ability to breed naturally, forage for food, and withstand harsh environmental conditions.

Due to their genetic diversity and adaptability, heritage breed turkeys are considered an important part of preserving genetic diversity in livestock and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. As a small-scale, urban farmer I value their unique qualities and I am committed to preserving these traditional breeds for future generations.

Spring is Coming

Spring is coming

It all begins with an idea. I want to grow that flower. Where should I place my tomatoes this year? Mentally walking back the start date of seeds I have saved from last year for this years harvest. Spring is inspiring. I walk around my yard checking my early risers: Alliums, Rhubarb, Crocus, Hyacinths. I check for spring buds on my cherry trees. My land is waking up after a long pause of needed dormancy. Our chickens are in full swing, making a basket full of beautifully colored eggs each day. I have planted anemones and ranunculus already, safely tucked below a floating row cover. The weather still has a stiff chill, but I am warm inside. These are the best days
